Jonathan was delighted to be invited to join the Royal Photographic Society Education Working Group.

The working group includes Head of Photography and Film at the University of Westminster, Fenton Medallist Andy Golding; documentary filmmaker and media consultant Peter Hayes ARPS; Emeritus Professor of Imaging Science at the University of Westminster, Ralph Jacobson ASIS HonFRPS; Head of Photographs at Birmingham Central Library, Peter James FRPS; Photographer and Associate Head of Media and Communication, Coventry University, Jonathan Shaw FRPS; and Skillset’s Photo Imaging Sector Manager, Pippa Walkley.

Over the past year Jonathan has been working closely with the Royal Photographic Society’s Chair of Distinctions Advisory Board Mike Hallett and Honorary RPS Fellow Daniel Meadows. The working group recommended some of the most far reaching changes to the distinction process for several decades. The new Multimedia & Narrative distinction panel, encompassing audio visual, the moving image and time based media considers the new tools of visual literacy, new platforms on which to deliver them that evaluates a considered object, or objects, that need to be seen over time.

This is the first of three Apps that Jonathan is working on in collaboration with the Serious Games Institute for the Open Classes that he oversees in the Department of Media at Coventry University. The #phonar app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch landed in the App store yesterday afternoon and is now available to download for free here.

The App provides easy access to the Photography and Narrative (#phonar) class run at CU Photography by Jonathan Worth, Jonathan Shaw and Matt Johnston. This is the second App built, following the success of the worlds first photography ‘class in an app’ last year.

The Photographic Mediations channel on iTunesU, that Jonathan established with the symposium (of the same title) he co-organised with Professor Gary Hall and Joanna Zylinska has now had over 700, 000 people tuning in. It has been ranked 2nd in the Fine Arts category and this year it has been recommended as ‘noteworthy’ alongside Universities such as Harvard and Stanford.

On the ground floor of a converted, Victorian-era cinema in Coventry, England, Jonathan Worth delivers a world-class photography lecture anyone can attend at any time, from anywhere, for free.

The green-tiled building stands on an otherwise typical city center street. From here, alongside teaching assistant Matt Johnston and boss Jonathan Shaw, they coral 28 attending students in addition to the few thousand clocking-in from across the globe. Continued…

We are delighted to announce that Jonathan has selected as one of a number of artists for the Situation Leeds project JUNCTION.

What is JUNCTION?

JUNCTION is a series of temporary commissions for Leeds City centre utilising the ubiquitous `junction box` as its canvas. Everyday we walk by these neglected metal boxes without a second thought, but now JUNCTION offers artists and designers the chance to transform these tired boxes into vibrant, intriguing and humorous interventions in street life.
Where?

All the identified boxes lie in the town centre; they form a trail that starts outside Leeds Train Station, go up Park Row, ending at the crossroads of Park Row and the Headrow, adjacent to the Henry Moore Institute and Leeds Art Gallery.

This is the first step in Situation Leeds’ commitment to raise the public art profile of the city. Over the next few years we hope to widen the JUNCTION project to other sites across the city and identify other exciting opportunities to work creatively with the urban fabric of the city centre. We believe that `the everyday`, could be a lot more intriguing, and we see JUNCTION as a first step to attract interest, support and sponsorship for further creative public realm projects that will make walking round Leeds City Centre more interesting, extraordinary and pleasurable.

An Ikon Gallery event with Jonathan Shaw, photographer and Associate Head of Media & Communication, Coventry University and artist Trevor Appleson. The speakers discuss the influence of Edweard Muybridge and Harold Edgerton’s photography on their recent work.

Jonathan has been awarded a Fellowship (FRPS) from the Royal Photographic Society. Chairman of the Fellowship Board Dr Michael Hallett said “Fellowship’s are awarded for excellence and distinguished ability, combined with evidence of originality and freshness in approach.”

This is a very exciting opportunity to work with this prestigious society in developing and promoting new opportunities for photographers to support their future.

Jonathan has been invited by Pete James, Head of Photographs at Birmingham Central Library and Ikon Gallery to talk about his work and its relationship to the pioneering work of Harold Edgerton. This new show pays reference to their first exhibition of his held in 1976. This was in fact the first European solo exhibition by the pioneering American scientist and photographer Dr Harold E. Edgerton.

Jonathan has been invited to talk as part of On the Move exhibition curated by Jonathan Miller at the Estorick Collection. All are welcome, the more the merrier!

Jonathan will be talking about his ideas, work and encounters with the masters of Time and Movement within photography with particular reference to the work of Eadweard Muybridge and Harold Edgerton.
